Join me on an unforgettable 7-day photography workshop visiting one of the great hidden jewels of landscape photography in Australia: the wild and magnificent Tarkine Region. Throughout the workshop we will delve into the magnificent northwest of Tasmania, photographing some of the most rugged coastline, pure rainforest, and pristine rivers in the country.
While we will have a rough itinerary, our schedule will remain flexible in order to match the locations with the prevailing conditions to cultivate the most optimal image creation windows. Your expert leader will be with you the entire time, helping you to make the very most of your equipment and craft your imagery as well as possible; both through composition on location and post-processing back at our comfortable bases.
About the location
takayna/The Tarkine is home to the largest temperate rainforest in Australia, the cleanest air in the world, a large array of wild and endangered creatures, and possesses one of the most rugged, varied, and photogenic coastlines you’ll ever witness. The workshop has three comfortable bases at Stanley, Arthur River and Corinna. We’ll have access to an incredibly varied selection of photographic locations, so we’ll have something to capture and explore no matter what nature throws at us – moss-laden trees and flowing tannin rivers for the atmospheric days and jagged dramatic seascapes for those colourful sunrises and sunsets. Best of all, you’ll be guided to these places and educated on how to best capture them by an extremely passionate photographer with local knowledge and a committed relationship to this landscape!
Itinerary & Photographic Opportunities
Our first base in Stanley provides us with a great way to ease into our 7 days of landscape photography. Comfortable accommodation in Stanley’s township places us at the foothills of The Nut, which will provide us with the main photographic subject for our first evening and morning. After a delicious local breakfast and some inspiration from the local gallery displays, we’ll make our way to our base in Arthur River.
Arthur River provides incredibly close access to the Tarkine’s renowned wild coastline, with locations such as the Edge of the World just a few minutes down the road, as well as a short hour’s drive to some of the state’s premiere locations for rainforest photography. Our three nights here will provide us with an amazing base to capture these world-class rainforest and coastal scenes. We’ll also join a local cruise down the Arthur River, where we’ll have the chance to capture mirror-like reflections, rainforest greenery, and even sea eagles and kingfishers in the trees. This cruise includes a gourmet BBQ lunch at no extra cost.
Our final base in Corinna places us deep amongst the rainforests in the southern area of the Tarkine region. Situated on the banks of the Pieman River, we’ll be within walking distance from several stunning trails filled with ancient moss-covered trees and autumnal fungi. On top of this, we’ll also be privately chartering our own small vessel to take us onto the river at sunrise, with the hopes of catching some more riverside rainforests and reflections under golden hour light. On our way back to Launceston, we’ll have the chance to shoot the beautiful Philosopher Falls and its surrounding forests.
The weather in Tasmania is highly changeable, especially on the wild west coast. While I naturally cannot guarantee any particular weather conditions to grace us during the workshop, what you will learn is how to read and predict forecasts, as well as how to adapt to them - both in your planning and in your photography.

Accommodation
Our first stop will be spent in the beautiful north-western town of Stanley, situated right by the slopes of The Nut. We will spend our first sunset and sunrise capturing this iconic pronounced headland, with several opportunities for views and compositions presenting themselves. We’ll be staying at the BIG4 campground, with each guest having their own queen suite cabin each night.
For the following three nights, our accommodation base will be at Arthur River Lodge, nestled along the banks of the beautiful, tannin-stained Arthur River that emerges from deep in the rainforest. Just 15 minutes away is the Marrawah Inn, which will be serving us up with delicious dinners each night, while for breakfasts and one lunch we shall operate off our own supplies. The 4 rooms available for guests include a king bed, a queen bed, a double bed and a single bed - please get in touch if you’d like to purchase a guarantee of one of these configurations.
We’ll spend the final two nights nestled in the beautiful Corinna Wilderness Village, deep amongst the Tarkine’s renowned rainforest by the banks of the Pieman River. Here you’ll have your own queen suite cabin once more to relax into at the end of each day. We’ll be within close walking distance of both the river and rainforest trails that we’ll explore. The Tannin Restaurant within the village will provide us with all our meals, including a continental breakfast and cooked lunches and dinners.
Flights & Logistics
If you don’t plan to extend your stay in Tasmania before or after the workshop, it is highly recommended that your flights are booked the day before the workshop commences and the day after it concludes, respectively. This avoids any chance of flight changes or other unforeseen circumstances either rushing or delaying our schedule. The meeting location will be provided during the information sessions.
Commencement
Launceston CBD - Wednesday April 9th @ 10:00am
Conclusion
Launceston CBD - Tuesday April 15th @ 4:00pm
Meals
While guests will not have any mandatory cooking to do, three breakfasts and one lunch at Arthur River during days 3, 4 and 5 will need to be self-supplied. This is partially due to the remote nature of this location with limited local options, as well as for the flexibility of eating in the field rather than needing to return to town. Guests will have the opportunity to purchase breakfast and lunch supplies at Smithton on day 2 en-route to Arthur River. Local establishments will be available for guests to purchase their remaining meals. More details will be provided upon booking; please get in touch with any questions you have about food on the workshop.
